The Lore

I have good memories of sitting ready in front of the tv in the 80s or 90s with my boombox and a fresh tape to record on as Airwolf came on the screen. One of the earliest theme songs I can remember thinking was the coolest thing ever, together with MacGyver, and weirdly enough the theme song to Dallas for some reason.

How it was made

It was made in FLStudio 20 Producer Edition with these VST instruments:

I searched long and hard for a proper good sound effect of a helicopter starting from ignition to full throttle. Found it. Sounds awesome. Also the only thing I had to nail here were the synth bassline, as that obviously was made to resemble rotating helicopter blades. Also had fun replicating the effect of old VHS tapes failing on you near the end. You know when the sound goes all wobbly and out of sync. Fun.

What it was based on

The theme song for Airwolf was composed by Sylvester Levay in 1984. As far as I can tell he used analog synthesizers like Oberheim OB-Xa, Jupiter 6 by Roland and Prophet 5 for that awesome iconic 80s sound, as well as the classic Linndrums. The helicopter and windnoises was synthesized sound effects. As good as it gets.
